Md. Nurul Islam, PhD (University of Nottingham, UK) Professor, Institute of Remote Sensing and GIS
The Director of the Institute, Professor Dr. Md. Nurul Islam, has been in the university teaching and research profession for more than two decades. He is experienced on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in floodplain and watershed management, research methodology, climate change and agricultural dynamics, hydrology, channel forms and dynamics, analysis of environmental component and disaster management. Apart from his permanent involvement at Jahangirnagar University, he was engaged as honorary Assistant professor at School of Geography, University of Nottingham, UK. Professor Islam is supervising several MPhil and PhD candidates on climate change, ecosystem services, flood management, dynamics of environmental components. He is enlisted reviewer of several peer-reviewed high-impact journals (e.g. Climate Change, Land Degradation and Sedimentology). Professor Nurul Islam is also involved in development activities with several institutions and organizations. He has also served as consultant to several organizations, UNDP, WKB, Bangladesh NGO Foundation and BRAC. He is a Fellow of the British Geomorphological Society (BGS), Asian Geographers Association (AGA), River Science Network, International Geographical Union (IGU), Bangladesh National Geographical Association (BNGA), and Bangladesh Geographical Society (BGS). Professor Islam’s research delves with multidisciplinary approaches; the riverine environmental issues, mainly focusing on climate change and its impact on flood, agricultural cropping dynamics, and farmer’s local knowledge on soil quality assessment and agricultural crops suitability. He is also familiar with application of GIS for Bayesian Decision-Support System (BDSS) and SPSS for statistical operations along with geostatistical analysis in spatial modelling for climate variability and watershed management and disaster risk assessment.
