The Department of Zoology, Jahangirnagar University started its journey in 1986 as a section of former Institute of Life Sciences and later it was upgraded to a full-fledged department under the Faculty of Biological Sciences. Now it is a leading department in the university and one of the pioneering institutes in Bangladesh in inseminating Zoological knowledge through up-to-date teaching and cutting-edge research.
The current strength of faculty of the department is 26. Most of them have earned their higher degrees from renowned foreign universities and are dedicated to teaching and research in their respective areas. Every year, the department enrolls a good number of undergraduate and graduate students and offer four-year B.Sc (Honours), one-year thesis and non-thesis M.Sc., M.Phil. and PhD degrees in Zoology. Currently, it has three branches, namely Entomology, Fisheries and Limnology and Wildlife and Conservation Biology in the department with updated curricula. These three branches undertake a wide range of research aspects including molecular, biochemical, ecological, medical, and forensic as well as genetic studies in the well-equipped laboratories and in the research fields to offer specialized higher degrees. The department has adequate on-campus research facilities and collaborations with several foreign universities and research institutes for exchanging students, faculty and researchers.
