The Department of Geography and Environment, one of the oldest and largest departments of Jahangirnagar University, offers superb teaching, first-class laboratory facilities and excellent employment prospects. Teaching and research in this department cover a broad spectrum - from arsenic issues to air quality monitoring, environmental health, spatial analysis, environmental hazard and risk analysis, climate change, urban and regional planning, fluvial geomorphology, and floodplain management. The department is equipped with GPS techniques, GIS and Remote Sensing facilities and physical laboratories. In addition, the department collects daily weather information from its own weather station located in the University Campus.

The department has successfully conducted a number of research works, trainings and workshops on issues of national interests in collaboration with different national and international agencies/universities since its beginning in 1971. The study on ‘Optimization of Benefits from Haors of Sylhet and Mymensingh’ was carried out jointly with the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan, USA under the financial assistance of USAID in the early 1970s.
